Let’s begin crafting your custom piece!
From start to finish, we work with you or your designer to create custom, one-of-a-kind pieces. Explore our Project Galleries for inspiration and let us know what speaks to you. We can reproduce any look with similar reclaimed materials. See how our custom design process works in the steps below — from your first visit and tour to the delivery.
1. Make a Design Appointment
Tell us what you have in mind. Together, we will review the scope of your project, create a budget, peruse our extensive library of completed projects, and tour the wood shops and antiques yard.
La Puerta Originals designs by appointment only. A $300 design fee covers your initial design appointment, during which we’ll discuss your vision, define the scope of work, and gather the details needed to prepare a personalized project estimate. The design fee is a necessary part of our custom design process, covering time with our in-house designer and the drawings needed to determine material and labor costs. All terms, conditions, and next steps will be reviewed at or before this appointment.

2. Project Drawings Begin
Once you have reviewed our library and have chosen designs that appeal to you, the drawing begins. We produce design drawings and specifications based on the scope of work outlined in the sales agreement.

3. Select Your Raw Materials
Based on your design and project intent, we will provide a selection of antique materials from our antique yard for you to choose from. Our yard features a range of antique and reclaimed woods, architectural antiques and salvaged metals from around the world. Please note that the material in our antique yard serves exclusively as raw material which we incorporate into our custom-made products.

4. Choose Your Finishes
A visit to our finish sample room and consideration of the colors in your project palette, how much texture and age you want the wood to carry, and the character of your antique materials will lead you to a finish that’s uniquely yours.

5. Select Your Hardware & Accessories
Due to the unique nature of our products and the wide variety of hardware and glass items, hardware and accessories are sold separately. We represent and sell hardware from brands that match the aesthetics of our products. We also offer a variety of antique hardware options as well as decorative hardware, cabinet hardware, clavos (decorative nails), metal strapping, and grillwork.

6. Into the Shop
Once the details of your project have been finalized and approved, we will create a production schedule and begin to create your one-of-a-kind piece! Our craftsmen use traditional tools to shape and detail each piece. Working from the approved sample, our finishers apply—usually in a several layers—non-toxic, water-based patinas, resulting in a finish that has the depth and complexity that you desire.

7. Ready to Ship
La Puerta Originals is located in Santa Fe, NM, but we ship coast to coast in the continental U.S. Clients may also pick up their items direct from us at our loading dock.
