The Gathering Place

Santa Fe kitchen remodel

In an amazing Santa Fe remodel, the kitchen is where you will find everyone. While there are fabulous sitting rooms and multiple landscaped outdoor patios, people gravitate toward this bright and airy room.

When Scott was tasked with the design for the remodel of this home, he started with the kitchen, specifically the stove hood. He gathered a carved antique column, several antique panels and two extravagantly carved antique corbels. The teak corbels from India are about 150-200 years old. The floral carving detail on those corbels is amazing! Sections of the column form the legs of the hood, a carved floral panel crosses the top, and the sides are formed by the corbels. A distressed white finish highlights the carving on all of these elements.

To celebrate this extraordinary work of art, Scott chose to keep the surrounding cabinets simple. The stove hood is the star, the cabinets the supporting cast. Made from salvaged lumber, the cabinets were finished in a white wash that shows the wood grain. The large refrigerator and separate freezer have custom wood panels that match the cabinets. Several of the upper cabinets mimic the six paned windows and are fitted with artisan bubble glass.

The kitchen island is enormous. It often ends up being the prep area. It features a small sink, which is handy with several cooks in the kitchen. The cabinets and drawers sport the same white wash finish as the rest of the kitchen cabinets. The island top is a contrasting warm brown. The countertop extends at the end to comfortably seat three.

The continuity of the whitewash finish extends to the ceiling beams and the doors. The salvaged barn beams were sanded and finished with the white wash. The French doors are also made of salvaged lumber and feature sidelights with operable shutters.

Our clients loved the remodel. It works so well as a gathering spot for a crowd, but also for just the two of them. It is bright and open, yet cozy. Scott succeeded here in so many ways – with this timeless design he brought beauty, quality and aesthetic excellence to one of the more functional rooms of the home.
